At the moment DJI is undoubtedly the most famous company in the drone market. They were the pioneers in helping the average user, with little experience, to fly easily.
Until recently, the choice of a DJI Phantom was very simple, after all there was only one model.
However, with the success of the brand, there are currently several different products available. So it’s no wonder that beginners get confused when trying to compare the features, benefits and prices. That’s why I collected information from the manufacturer and made this post to help you out.
DJI is offering five Phantom models, two are built on the original Phantom platform and three are built on the latest “number 2” platform.
Drones built with the original Phantom platform:
Phantom 1 – the original Phantom, updated with several improvements.
Phantom FC40 – The FC40 adds a camera and FPV (smartphone or tablet), but with very limited functionality.
Drones built with the number 2 platform (The main improvement was the largest battery life) :
Phantom 2 – It’s a Phantom 1 with improved and longer flight time battery.
Phantom 2 Vision – Phantom 2 with 14MP camera
Phantom 2 Vision Plus – Phantom 2 with Gimbal (video stabilization) and camera 14MP
Dji Phantom 2 Vision – This is the drone you want!
What are the differences between Phantom 1 and 2?
Most of the differences are in shooting and flight scheduling.
Phantom 2 does not have an App, while the 1 has the DJI FC40.
The remote control of the Phantom 2 has a communication range of 1,000m. The phantom 1 has a range of 800m.
Flight time of Phantom 2 is 25 minutes, while flight 1 is a maximum of 15 minutes.
Average prices in Brazilian stores:
DJI Phantom 1 (without camera) – $ 2,200.00
DJI Phantom FC40 (camera) – $ 2,700.00
DJI Phantom 2 (without camera) – $ 3,120.00
DJI Phantom 2 Vision – (current top of the line with the best camera and FPV) – $ 5,307.00
DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus – (It is the Vision + Gimbal) – $ 5,999.00
When it comes to buying, it is good to see if your model will or will not come with a camera so you won’t be surprised later on. If you wish to purchase a separate camera, DJI recommends using a GoPro Hero3 +.
Our recommendation for your choice:
If you’re more worried about longer flight times, extra features and long range, the Phantom 2 is your best choice.
If you’re on a tight budget, Phantom 1 is your drone.
